The wisdom to know the difference.
Lots of people have heard of the Serenity Prayer.
If y ou've somehow missed it because you were,
I don't know... living under a rock maybe...It goes like this:
Grant me the serenity,
To accept the things I cannot change;
The courage to change the things I can;
And the wisdom to know the difference.
Yes, I know that the prayer starts with the word "God".
But since I have issues with that (see yesterday's post), I skip that part.
I've never really had any trouble with accepting the things
I cannot change (Ok, well, most of the time...)
I definitely don't lack the courage to change the things I can.
I don't think anyone who knows me would argue that...
It's the wisdom to know the difference that I struggle with.
I'm going to be having a "wisdom to know the difference" kind of day today.
I'm a little frightened.
I'm facing my fear and walking right into it.
I, of course, want things to turn out well
(not that I believe that they will (it's not pessimism, it's realism))
but I worry that I'll try to fix the things that can't be fixed...
Like the other personalities in the room...
[rolling eyes] That's something that I already know can't be changed...
But I'm a fixer. A problem solver. I want to fix everything.
I'd give anything up to be able to fix the problem.
Even the stuff that can't be fixed.
I have to remember, when faced with a wisdom to know
the difference day, to take deep breaths.
To think before I open my big mouth and to
not be willing to cave in and relinquish my principles just to
fix the things that can't be fixed.
Before I begin the fight, to ask myself if the thing
that I'm thinking about fighting for is something I can change.
And if it's not, to walk away. No matter what it costs me....
I just hope I can tell the difference.
